A fabulous destiny for the Hôtel Westminster: for over 150 years this one-time monastery, later converted into a palace, has been one of the most prestigious addresses in Paris, located on the prestigiuos Rue de La Paix between Place Vendôme, l'Opéra and Rue Saint-Honoré. This spot was a favourite of the Duke of Westminster during his visits to Paris. In 1846 the hotel assumed his name and coat of arms and ever since has maintained a charm that is "so very British". |
The Hôtel Westminster, which is part of Warwick International Hotel, is itself a monument to classic elegance. The baroque facade with its balconies and wrought iron, public spaces filled with marble, crystal and brocades and 102 guest rooms and suites filled with Antiques, combine to create a tasteful oasis on the fashionable Rue de la Paix. The hotel's sumptuous lobby is faced in black and sienna marble with a two-stone covered ceiling. Its main point is a gilded antique table holding a dramatic floral arrangement, illuminated by a crystal chandelier. Around it, conversational groups of floral brocade chairs invite guests to sit and relax. |
The Michelin-starred "Le Céladon" restaurant, known for its outstanding cuisine and exceptional service, offers a soothing environment for relaxed dining. Using shades of celadon green with accents of celadon porcelain, crystal, and silk the restaurant is a series of small dining salons separated by graceful archways. With this new decor Pierre-Yves Rochon, the internationally renowned interior designer, wanted to recreate the French style of the Regency era, combining it with an oriental touch reflecting the origin of the name Le Céladon, which means Chinese porcelain. The result is a refined restaurant with a distinctly personalized ambiance, reminiscent of in-home dining. The reputation of the Executive Chef Christophe Moisand is well-known among discerning Parisians. He has introduced a medley of exceptional dishes which demonstrates his creativity. |
The Hôtel Westminster represents the distinguished elegance of Parisian deluxe hotels, its prestigious location is known as the home of the city's finest jewelers and boutiques. Cartier and Dunhill flank the hotel's entrance. Important shopping on the rue de Faubourg Saint-Honoré and the Galedes Lafayette are just steps away and the exciting sights of the city are close by. With its traditional Parisian elegance combined with modern comfort and discreet services the hotel offers the perfect surrounding to complete a marvellous holyday or to relax after a hard working day. The charm and grace of bygone days combined with the demands of today's discerning traveller. |
A few words of history: the Westminster's beginnings were not nearly glamorous. In its first incarnation, the Westminster was a convent. But in the 1840's, when Napoleon III appointed Baron Haussmann to redesign Paris into the magnificent city it is today, the old convent was closed. It was turned into an inn, a coaching stop, and in 1846 adopted the coat of arms and name of the Duke of Westminster, a regular guest. Ever since, it has attracted international VIP's and celebrities. |
A curiosity is the hotel's cellar in the basement of the former convent: it contains the preserved graves of the convent's Mother Superior, who were respectfully left to rest in peace when the building was converted to a holtery. At the turn of the century, when the building was acquired by Jean Bruchon, he declared that the site should be preserved in perpetuity. Not only was Mr. Bruchon's basement unusual when he took over the hotel he found a collection of antique clocks which he continued to expand over the years. Today the brass, copper and marble time pieces, along with other priceless antiques, are part of the rich furnishings that stress the Westminster's voluptous public areas and guest rooms. |
