Metro
and RER:
With one single
metro ticket you can go anywhere within Paris city limits as long
as you don't go out of the station where you are connecting from
one line to another. That goes for Metro and RER, the ticket
policy on the bus working according to sections. According to the
length of your stay you better buy a pass called "Carte Orange"
valid for a week or a month which gives you access to different
concentrical sections from Paris city-limits towards the far suburb
with intermediate sections according to your needs.

The RER system
is the high speed city-suburb network that in a short amount of
time can zoom you across the city, out to Versailles or St. Germain-en-Laye,
and even Euro Disneyland. (Note that the métros approach each platform
from your left while the RER trains approach from your right).
RER trains can
be accessed with métro tickets for travel inside Paris, but fares
between Paris and the suburbs vary according to destination, requiring
the purchase of a ticket for each trip.
There are four
lines (A, B, C, D) and each one, forks into numerous directions.
Of course the RER and métro lines connect at various points and
though the RER is not designed to be used for very short distances,
it makes longer distance traveling across the city or from city
to suburb incredibly easy and efficient.

Key junctions
(correspondences) stations are Châtelet/Les Halles, Nation, Etoile,
and Auber. Don't confuse Charles de Gaulle/Etoile, where the Arc
de Triomphe is located with Charles de Gaulle/Roissy, the site of
the airport.
On the platform
there are lit panels indicating the precise direction and list of
stations the next train will be serving. All trains stop at all
Paris stations. Be careful at Nation and Etoile that you haven't
mounted a train on the correct line but the wrong branch. Otherwise,
you'll have to circle back and pay another fare. Note that you can
go to the Château de Vincennes métro stop with the
same one métro ticket but to get off the RER at Vincennes
you need an additional fare.
There is normally
one First Class carriage on the RER trains which, in order to avail
of, you must pay a premium on your ticket. There is absolutely no
advantage.
