The quartier "Des Abbesses" in the heart of Montmartre owes its name to King Louis VI, "The Fat" and to Adelaide of Savoy, his wife. They founded an abbey for nuns on the knoll in 1133. The hotel is located in the very heart of this picturesque village clinging to the slopes of the Butte Montmartre, background of the famous film, "Amélie Poulain", only footsteps from the Place du Tertre and its painters. Renowned haunts such as the Moulin Rouge or the Bateau Lavoir are bundled up among the fabric merchants (Saint Pierre market), the bustling Lepic Abbesses market, the typical bistrots, the façades dripping with greenery and secret little squares. Very close to the hotel there is also the most romantic wall of the world: the "Je t'aime" wall, a surface of 40 square metres filled with "I love you" written 1000 times in more than 300 languages! The streets at Montmartre are plenty of terraces, fashionable boutiques and places of interest. Do not forget that the most important painters and writers in the world lived in Paris and in this district!
The Sacré Coeur Basilica: Was built between 1876 and 1914, following plans drawn up by the architect Abadie, thanks to the national subscription of the Cœur de Jésus. Its vocation was to reconcile the French after the tragic events of the Commune en 1871. Throughout the 19th century, artists and writers were attracted by the free and picturesque life that reined on the Butte looking out across all of Paris.
The Steps of "La Butte": A marvellous change of scenery awaits you as you climb the steps of La Butte made famous in song by Aristide Bruant. Follow them up to the Place du Tertre and its painters, its outdoor cafés and the Sacré Cœur Basilica. And don't miss the Arenas of Montmartre where shows can be enjoyed in summer. |
